It’s my final issue documenting the stories and workshops of the Voices of Lefferts Community Writing Journal. I’ve learned so much about myself and the way I tend to live in isolation - keep myself separate from my community. This project forced me to leave what I thought was my comfort zone and engage with neighbors I otherwise would not. I’ve been invited inside their homes, met their families, heard their thoughts, fears, and memories of Flatbush/PLG. I felt so welcomed and am incredibly grateful for the opportunity.
It’s been four issues and two years. I feel ready to start a new project and hope to say more about that soon. Below is one of my favorite portraits from the recent journal: Caroline Holden. More images of this issue to come. All of the Voices of Lefferts Issues are available at Greenlight Bookstore on Flatbush Ave.
"I grew up in Flatbush...and I often find myself thinking about my childhood and my parents. My mother died eleven years ago, and my father passed away four years ago. I'm still struggling to come to terms with these losses, grappling with memories that are both sweet and sad", writes Caroline Holden in the latest issue of Voices of Lefferts Community Writing Journal.
